About The Levels and Their Syllabus

About Various Levels

The course of Bharatanatyam has various levels from beginner to advanced.

The names of the levels are as follows –

Ø Prarambhik (Basic): The dancer is taught basic steps like Adavus and Natta Adavus.

Ø Praveshika Pratham or 1st year (Beginner): This is the first formal examination given by the dancer. Basic techniques are taught in the 1st year.

Ø Praveshika Purna or 2nd year (Beginner): The second year consists of more basic knowledge about the dance form. The dancer is made accustomed to the exercises and body movements.

Ø Madhyama Pratham or 3rd year (Intermediate): Here, the dancer learns deep knowledge about the dance form -- both theoretical and practical. Some hasta mudras are taught.

Ø Madhyama Purna or 4th year (Advanced): The dancer has to learn to play the song (bol) along with the nattuvangam. All the hasta mudras are taught along with various shlokams. The previous year knowledge can also be examined.

Ø Visharad or Degree year (Advanced): Visharad is the degree year. Various exams are conducted during this level. The dancer learns complex items and theory. Previous year knowledge is examined.

After completing all these levels successfully, the dancer finally gets her degree/diploma for the course in Bharatanatyam.
