About Various Levels
The course
of Bharatanatyam has various levels from beginner to advanced.
The
names of the levels are as follows –
Ø Prarambhik (Basic): The dancer is
taught basic steps like Adavus and Natta Adavus.
Ø Praveshika Pratham or 1st
year (Beginner): This is the first formal examination given by the dancer.
Basic techniques are taught in the 1st year.
Ø Praveshika Purna or 2nd year
(Beginner): The second year consists of more basic knowledge about the dance
form. The dancer is made accustomed to the exercises and body movements.
Ø Madhyama Pratham or 3rd year
(Intermediate): Here, the dancer learns deep knowledge about the dance form --
both theoretical and practical. Some hasta mudras are taught.
Ø Madhyama Purna or 4th year
(Advanced): The dancer has to learn to play the song (bol) along with the
nattuvangam. All the hasta mudras are taught along with various shlokams. The
previous year knowledge can also be examined.
Ø Visharad or Degree year (Advanced):
Visharad is the degree year. Various exams are conducted during this level. The
dancer learns complex items and theory. Previous year knowledge is examined.
After
completing all these levels successfully, the dancer finally gets her
degree/diploma for the course in Bharatanatyam.
SYLLABUS ACCORDING TO THE LEVELS
The
syllabus depends on the institute/academy you learn from.

if your course does not follow Gandharva, then there is a general syllabus
also. This syllabus is applicable for all Bharatanatyam dancers.
