First off, we need to understand that learning classical
dance/music is entirely different from learning other courses like engineering,
arts, etc. This means that if I want to pursue my post-graduation for, let’s
say, Civil engineering, then I’d want to choose the best university. I would choose the university on the basis of various criterias like infrastructure,
faculty etc.
However, this is not the case for classical dance.
In the case of Bharatanatyam, there are two universities available :
a) Gandharva Mahavidyalaya(ABGMV)
Each institute teaches almost the same curriculum. The faculty is good in both and both conduct exams for classical dance as well as music. Both the institutes give you a diploma/degree after the completion of the full course.
The thing is, learning performing arts is done not
simply by just mugging up the theory or performing the steps like a robot. To
become a true artist, you need to have that passion inside you, the blessings
of your Guru and the grace of a dancer. If your heart is in it and if you are
focused, then you are sure to become an excellent artist, no matter where you learn from.
Hence, you may choose any of the two universities to
pursue your career in Bharatanatyam.
