                                                        ABOUT UNIS

So, just like we got various institutions for selecting the schools (CBSE, ICSE, etc.), we also got two major classical dance universities for learning the course of Bharatanatyam. These are as follows:

a) Gandharva Mahavidyalaya: The first type of university is Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, fully known as Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (ABGMVM).

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal is an institution that works for the propagation of the Indian classical performing arts (dance and music). Their main music school, also called Sangeet Vidyalaya, is located in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

They teach as well as conduct examinations nationally for the subjects of classical dance and music. The courses taught here are of an advanced level. The teachers are skilled. The examinations are conducted twice a year, in April/May and November/December, at 800 centers around the world.

Around 1200 institutions throughout the country and elsewhere have been affiliated by ABGMVM and follow their syllabus. ABGMVM provides the degree/diploma of graduation in the course of Bharatanatyam.

 b) Prayag Sangeet Samiti: The other type of university is the Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Their motive is to popularize Indian classical music in the country.

They teach Hindustani classical music and conduct examinations for classical music as well as dance. The Prayag course is vast and deep and their centers are spread throughout the country.

Although, the Samiti’s courses are not recognized by UGC it has been affiliated by the Allahabad University, Rohilkhand University and Jaunpur University.

*The Samiti offers good courses for Bharatanatyam, but it does not provide the diploma/graduation degree for the art form.
